Course Overview:

With so many photography courses to choose from, why go to Blackpool?

Blackpool & The Fylde College has an international reputation for producing photographers of the highest calibre, and the majority of our graduates go on to work in photography or an allied field.

This tradition continues with the Foundation Degree in Photography & Digital Design. Validated by Lancaster University, the FdA is a 2 year, full time Degree course, with an optional top-up third year. This Foundation Degree offers the same level of expert tuition, guidance and facilities our BA(Hons) programme delivers, but has an emphasis on the practical in the first two years.

Whilst studying on the course you will develop your knowledge of professional photographic practice through series engaging practical and academic briefs. You will develop your technical skills and knowledge in the use of format, studio & location practice, traditional and digital techniques and equipment.

Being a degree course, your practical work will be underpinned by essential research and personal development skills. A critical engagement with photographic history and wider contemporary cultural theory and contextual issues will be linked directly to your practical work to inform and improve your photographic practice.

We believe that photography is so much more than taking pretty pictures, and to develop into a critically thinking visual communicator the balance between technical excellence and critical studies is essential. The FdA Photography & Digital Design course, backed up by the unparalleled resources of B&FC make this course ideal for those who want the vocational and technical content of A level or BTEC Diploma but need a greater academic challenge to push their photography beyond what a purely vocational qualification can provide.

The FdA is a full time course. Lectures and time tabled teaching sessions are 2 days per week, but being a degree, you will be fully expected to manage your own time to study in your own time. This self-led method of learning is what separates a degree from a F.E course, and you will receive guidance and tutorial support to make the transition from heavily guided A level and BTEC courses to an autonomous, self-managed style of learning.
